Cashie River Tree houses - January 2023

We made a late January weekend trip to the Cashie River Tree Houses located in Windsor, NC in Bertie County. The tree houses are located along the Cashie River. The weekend we chose ended up being very cold (high 20's at night) but it was a fun trip! Despite being located in a campground, the are isolated enough that you don't really see anyone else except coming and going and using the restroom. The restroom is very nice... heated with hot water showers, sinks and multiple toilets... but beware staying at the treehouses that the bathrooms are probably a quarter mile walk each way down a boardwalk... so don't wait til it's an emergency! :)

The Cashie River is a quiet, slow flowing tannin-stained river common to Eastern North Carolina. A canoe was not in the plans for this trip but a future visit is definitely going to have to include some paddling.

The town of Windsor is a pretty typical Easter NC small town. There is some great local restaurants and a free local zoo that the town operates. Across from the zoo is a short Cashie River boardwalk nature trail.

The tree houses are well built and a lot of fun to stay at. There are 4 tree houses in total and there are in 2 groups of 2... we camped as 2 groups so we had the 2 far tree houses (3 and 4) together and nobody had rented the other 2 tree houses... so it was like having the whole place to ourselves! The tree houses DO have electricity but that is it. As mentioned previously, running water is a quarter mile walk each way back to the bathhouse so plan accordingly. The tree houses have a bed platform downstairs and a loft for more sleeping. They are quaint and well built.

Overall, the tree house camping was a great experience. We could has used a little bit warmer weather but I imagine this place would be MISERABLE with insects in the hot summer months. It seems like this place kind of flies under the radar a little bit and I am not sure why... it is a true gem and we will definitely be back... with a canoe!
