Recently we experienced some very high “king” tides along the coast of North Carolina. These flood tides present some unique places where water is someplace it normally is not. It’s a fun opportunity to get out in the canoe and look for red drum in flooded grassy areas.
Mad River Canoe along a flooded road that made for an easy portage
We made two trips recently. The first was with a friend in my Mad River Canoe. We managed to find a school of red drum along the bank in a flooded marsh grass area. The fish readily took Z Man paddle tail lures on a jig head. Light tackle makes these lower side slot drum a lot of fun to catch, especially out of a canoe!

The second trip out was at low tide on the opposite side of the flood tide. No fish were caught but the water was crystal clear and the weather was beautiful!
