During our summer travels we made a random day stop at Hanging Rock State Park in Stokes County, North Carolina. Located about half an hour north of Winston Salem but truly off the beaten path this is a very large park by land area and amenities. The park has mountain bike trails, hiking trails, rock climbing, waterfalls, camping and a park lake with a beach. I was surprised how crowded this park was for being not super easy to get to. The lake beach in particular was quite the zoo.
After checking out the visitors center, we did a short hike to Lower Cascades Falls and then played around the rock garden. Despite being a little higher in elevation it was still a hot and humid North Carolina summer day. We finished our visit by driving by the aforementioned very crowded lake beach and headed on our way. It was an interesting park considering I barely even knew it existed let alone had all the outdoor opportunities it possesses. We might have to return for a camping trip and further exploration some day.
