I recently spent a couple of nights camping in the Oyster Point Campground in the Croatan National Forest. This is not a new campsite to me. As a matter of fact, I would almost consider it my “home” campground. Oyster point is a mere half an hour from my house. I have camped there numerous times. It is a small, lesser known campground that has a lot of offer.
Oyster Point is the least developed of the Croatan established campgrounds. Both Cedar Point and Flanners Beach campgrounds offer more amenities (flush toilets, showers, etc…). Oyster Point has vault toilets, tent pads and fire rings. There is a lot less traffic in general at this campground, and a lot of less RV campers than I have experienced at most campgrounds.
Oyster Point is both on the southern terminus of the Neusiok Trail and on the banks of the Newport River. This location makes the spot ideal for both hiking AND paddling. Hunting opportunities are not far away, and the fishing in the Newport River is fairly good.
On this particular trip, I brought my canoe along as well as my new puppy Hannah and my good friend Baxter. We established our camp, practiced bushcraft skills, made a lovely fire and went for a paddle on the Newport River. It was a quick trip but a much needed break. The campground was quiet in general and the symphony of owl hoots at night were simply divine.
There is an unimproved boat ramp next to the campsite that allows for easy launching of paddle craft. Many of the campsites on the river side have direct access to the river from the individual campsite. The sunsets are exquisite.
