Warrior Creek, W. Kerr Scott Lake

We recently spent a week family camping at the Warrior Creek Campground on W. Kerr Scott Lake in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Part of the US Army Corp of Engineers park system, Warrior Creek is one of three campgrounds on the lake. There are numerous other day sites on the lake that make for a large number of outdoor recreation activities at W. Kerr Scott Lake.

Out lakeside tent site

The lake was formed in the 1960s from the damming of the Yadkin and is named after a former governor of North Carolina. Warrior Creek is probably the quietest of the three campgrounds on the lake but boasts a lot of advantages, especially for tent campers. Although there are RV sites at Warrior Creek, the other campgrounds are more geared towards RV campers. The RV section at Warrior Creek was separate from the tent camping sites. We camped during the week in hopes of having the least amount of crowds. Until our last night camping, we were the only tent campers at the campground. We had the whole place to ourselves!

Swim beach at Warriors Creek Campground

Warrior Creek has a wonderful swim beach. The most active spot in the campground, most camping families could be found on this nice, clean beach enjoying the cool waters of the lake.

Campfire Ring

The campground also has a nice playground for the kids, but was closed at the time of our visit due to Covid-19.

Near the swim beach and tent sites there are vault toilets. A short walk up the road leads to the RV camping area and a bathhouse with flush toilets and hot showers.

Trail Dog

Also located in the park are the Warrior Creek bike trails. These single track bike trails are some of the finest on the East Coast. The trails are multi-use and also used for trail running and hiking. We went for a family hike on the trails and were courteous to passing mountain bikers and they were courteous to us. Give them the right away and everything will be fine.

Lake view along the Warrior Creek trail

Part of the Warrior Creek trail system follows along the path of the Overmountain Victory Trail. This path was used by the Overmountain Men as the marched to meet Patrick Ferguson at the battle of King’s Mountain during the Revolutionary War. Wilkes county is full of great Revolutionary War history. The inhabitants of the area during colonial times were a fiercely independent sort.

Some cool fungi along the trail….

While technically in the foothills, there is enough elevation changes in the area to make things interesting. You are not going to feel like you have climbed a mountain, but there are some beautiful views and varying terrains.

Steak night!

Overall, as far as car camping/family camping sites go Warrior Creek is pretty great. So many established campgrounds are so geared towards RV camping that tent camping is almost a footnote. Tent camping sites were very good. Not huge and relatively close together (hence why we went during the week) but nice tent pad, fire ring and even an electrical hook up with standard 120v outlets. I can honestly say I’ve never seen that at a tent specific site. The campground hosts were friendly and efficient. Firewood and ice is available on site. We will definitely go back.
